―One can only transform the body truly by using it in the daily living environment.
While exploring the concept of “reversible destiny,” artists Shusaku Arakawa and Madeline Gins grew more inclined towards architecture. The restoration project for the Reversible Destiny Lofts Mitaka, in which we were blessed to participate in the design to embody the artists’ vision, has now been completed, spanning over four months.
As a participatory restoration project was originally planned, the Reversible Destiny Lofts Mitaka faced a challenge in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, through a crowdfunding campaign aimed to pass this building on to the next generation, approximately 14 million yen was raised, accompanied by widespread support.
Deteriorated areas with exposed steel structures were sanded down and painted several times with fireproof paint. Common areas restored, the Reversible Destiny Lofts Mitaka reversed its destiny and has resumed building tours, events, and short-stay programs by art curators this spring.
