――In a monotonous space devoid of stimuli, human senses grow dormant.
Such were the insightful words left behind by Shusaku Arakawa. What would a residence look like when it is designed “around the body” to awaken the senses humans inherently possess?
Imagine floors with gentle undulations much like an upturned bowl, providing a soothing sensation underfoot; a spherical room where the acoustics change abruptly as you enter; or a ladder and a climbing pole intriguingly installed in the living room.
These unique features of the Reversible Destiny Lofts Mitaka not just question the visitors as to what or why they are, but also stimulate the senses through the complexity and imbalance. The varying slopes of the floors and ceilings constantly switch the eye level between people, affecting the dynamics of human interactions within the space.
This home challenges our subconscious bias, societal norms, and common sense, inviting us to engage with the building through our unique bodies.
