Nagasaki Station, for which our firm was responsible for the design, has received the Excellence Prize at the Brunel Award 2025, presented by The Watford Group. Named after the great 19th-century engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the Brunel Award is one of the world’s most prestigious international honors in railway architecture and civil engineering, recognizing outstanding railway facilities.
Nagasaki Station opened on September 23, 2022. Developed as the terminus of the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, it marks a new chapter in the city’s history as its primary land gateway, realizing a plan first decided more than half a century ago. The Nagasaki Station functions as a terminal where the Shinkansen and conventional lines run in parallel, while the conventional-line station was elevated in March 2020 as part of a continuous grade-separation project. Our firm designed both station buildings, and by planning them in parallel, achieved a unified and cohesive station environment.
Amid Nagasaki’s once-in-a-century urban transformation and surrounding large-scale redevelopments, including Nagasaki Stadium City, Shinkansen Nagasaki Station functions as a leading project and a key hub from which people embark on journeys across Japan via the Shinkansen KAMOME.
