At Nagasaki Station—recipient of the Award at the Brunel Award 2025—the concourse was designed as the first space where visitors can sense Nagasaki’s history and culture. Materials were carefully selected to express the city’s unique character.
Brick tiles, steel, and wood are combined to evoke Nagasaki’s historical legacy, from Japan’s earliest brickmaking techniques and shipbuilding industry that supported modern industrialization, to the rich forests of its many islands. Through this material palette, the design allows visitors to naturally experience Nagasaki’s cultural identity.
To foster a sense of attachment to the new station, a stained-glass wall created through a citizen-participation workshop was incorporated into the interior. This collaborative process has helped shape a station that is widely loved by the community.
By integrating technological innovation with local identity, Shinkansen Nagasaki Station continues to serve as a new landmark for the city and a vital transportation hub connecting Kyushu and Honshu.
