This is a revitalization project of an old ryokan in a picturesque landscape of Hibiki valley blessed with ume trees. The new extension building was built towards a beautiful view over the valley and its pitched roof inherits the element of Hita’s traditional architecture. Together with its roof tiles and ume-inspired earth wall finished by Hita’s plasterer, the building expresses the regionality of Tenryo Hita. Extensive renovation, including addition of guest rooms, altering to open-air baths, and repair works in common areas, annex, restaurants, and bath houses, was carried out on the existing building, using local timber and motifs evocative of the atmosphere of Okuhita.
