The project transforms a 127-year-old brick monastery of the past—a designated historic building within Nagasaki City’s Minamiyamate Traditional Buildings Preservation District—into a hotel. By repurposing the structure while preserving the original façade, we envision passing the building that cultivated the history and culture to the next generation. The original masonry exterior walls were reinforced by the rebar insertion method and a new steel frame installed in the interior. The cherished exterior design is restored and preserved, while the interior features design elements that evoke the memories of Nagasaki’s past.
