Kagoshima Central Terminal Building AMU PLAZA Kagoshima

To celebrate the 10^th anniversary of Amu Plaza Kagoshima (designed by our company and completed in 2004), the annexe “Premium Building” was added to the Kagoshima Central Terminal Building. Since Kagoshima’s culture is represented by the color “black,” such as produce like “black pig, black vinegar, black sugar and black shochu” or products like “black sake pot, black Satsuma porcelain and black cut glass,” we decided to make black the base color for the façade. The color scheme blends well with the surrounding buildings and scenes, where the main facilities around the terminal use black as its accent color, and it also balances well with the “red” used for the Amu Plaza Main Building. The façade’s granite is ash fall-proof and is easy to maintain with its smooth finish. The first and second floors are lined with brownish tone bricks to accent the façade. The shape of the building is square, avoiding an abnormal form to respect the atmosphere of surrounding buildings consisting of straight lines and to make effective use of the square meters for retail stores. The interior of the building is based on the color “white” to create a mature and calm atmosphere to fit the name “Premium Building.” The sidewalls of the first to third-floor escalator is a light wall with its surface panel designed in the image of Satsuma cut glass. You could see platforms of the Kagoshima Chuo Station for Kyushu Shinkansen from the east windows on the seventh floor, which has become a “relaxation spot” for train buffs and the locals. The building has a character and charm that respects Kagoshima city’s “Integral city development of the Kagoshima Chuo Station and its surrounding.“ The planning for full contribution to the liveliness and circulation around the terminal station was one of the reasons for receiving the 4^th Kagoshima City Scenery Urban Development Award.
