The Tokyo National Museum  was founded and opened in 1872 with an exposition held at Yushima Seido .
The museum welcomes its 150th anniversary this year, and over the past 40 years, we have been involved in the design of its archives, the Heiseikan , the Main Gate Plaza , the Cultural Properties Administration Building , and the renovation of all facilities except the Gallery of Horyuji Treasures .
From the Hyokeikan , finished at the end of the Meiji era, to buildings that have been designated as Important Cultural Property , the architecture itself is like an exhibit showing clear traces of past craftspeople’s work.
As one designer put it, “When renovating the museum, a sense of respect naturally arises. Not only for the architects of the time, who left their names in architectural history, but for everyone who was involved in these buildings.” In this way, continued activity has created value throughout the Museum’s 150-year history.
The knowledge about exhibitions and storage that has been accumulated over the past 40 years will be passed on to the design and renovation of the future.
