This renewal project remodeled the Building No.2 on the Omiya Campus of Osaka Institute of Technology, to accommodate the relocation of its Department of Architecture. It absolutely required spaces that encourage the design, learning and exchange that are unique to architectural education. For the drafting rooms on the 1st floor, we planned spaces scattered with stepped benches of various dimensions and timber types, in the scale street and jury corner areas, so that occupants can learn sense of scale. This open architectural space lets students learn about scale and materials, which are characteristic elements of architectural education, on an everyday basis. On the 4th and 5th floors, staff rooms and research labs are arranged in a staggered pattern where they can be glimpsed from the “streets” they face in the center of the building. These spaces are in mutually complementary relationships with the open labs, to produce lab spaces which generate interaction and encourage interdisciplinary approaches.
