Architect Junzo Yoshimura, who designed the main buildings of Aichi University of the Arts, “envisioned a campus that would resonate with the sky and landscape.” Alongside these words, he arranged the school buildings in a dispersed layout along the undulating landscape and east-west axis. Our new intervention addresses the aging buildings and space issues caused by expanded research activities and larger artworks, relocating the scattered sculpture rooms into one space. The new buildings are designed as a “village,” where each building is organized by function and placed along the campus axis so that different creative activities can occur in the same context. Each building structure uses a combination of reinforced concrete with steel or reinforced concrete with wood. A large wooden canopy at the entrance creates a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
