The building composition was changed from the parallel type of the existing building, said to be the standard type of ward architecture with lowrise blocks linked by walkways, to a highrise consolidated type consisting of four groups. The groups are the central examination block, the wards, the outpatient examination block, and the management and clinical research block. These groups are connecting along a number of lateral and longitudinal axes, in a clear and functional layout. The low-chroma white-based tiles on the exterior harmonize with the surrounding environment, such as the Komazawa Olympic Park, which is surrounded by green and blessed by nature, and with the trees remaining on the site. The planning concept for the floor plan was to use unified spaces to avoid needless mixing between inpatients and staff. Particularly in outpatient examination departments with large numbers of outpatients, the examination rooms for each department are arranged on three sides around the three-level atrium, while the fourth side, to the south, is left open. The resulting composition is visually highly legible and produced refreshing spaces with character, which are popular with outpatients. The same consideration for amenity is applied in other departments, as we also strove to create an efficient and modern facility.
