Nada Junior and Senior High School, which were founded in 1927, are known as preparatory schools of history and tradition. Considering Nada School’s unchanging educational principles and scenery, the new school building was planned around the design concept of “intellect visible to the eye,” which is to say, unconstrained intellect. To harmonize with the existing school buildings, the design carries on the historic appearance of the Nada School campus, by coordinating with the environment around the Sumiyoshi River. The composition of the large glazed surfaces and the horizontally-extending eaves express openness and innovative spirit. There is a semi-outdoor piloti space in the middle of the first floor, which provides the main movement route to the sports ground, and serves as a place for interaction and creativity, continuous with the courtyard. There is a rooftop terrace on the second floor, which is an abundantly green space, intended to yield psychological benefits from the colors and scents of herbs. There are community tables in the hallways where students and teachers can talk, forming intellectual spaces where classrooms and hallways are united and opened out.
