Osaka Metropolitan University Morinomiya Campus

Forest of Knowledge: A New Urban Center Connected to the City

The Osaka Metropolitan University Morinomiya Campus, established as the first university-wide learning space for new students across all faculties and departments, is located in Morinomiya, one of Osaka’s hubs along the city’s east-west urban axis. Based on the concept, “Forest of knowledge,” the campus aims to be a high-density urban campus that fosters diverse learning and exchange. The 13-story building, standing approximately 60 meters tall, accommodates around 6,000 students and faculty. The three-story pilotis and “tree-columns,” in harmony with the greenery of Osaka Castle Park, create a welcoming space for visitors. The spiral-shaped activity space, centered around a courtyard, fosters organic connections and symbolizes diversity. Energy efficiency is achieved through smart systems for air conditioning, lighting, and access control, combined with app-based controls and data integration. The exterior walls incorporate permeable shading systems and eco-skins to reduce solar heat gain while maintaining views. High-efficiency equipment and natural ventilation are used to pursue sustainability. The pilotis use locally sourced wood, considering regional resource circulation. Utilizing treated wastewater from the adjacent Nakahama Sewage Treatment Plant, environmental impact is reduced in air conditioning and bathrooms.
