This project creates a new landscape and shared place of belonging within the campus. Conceived as a symbol that weaves together people, nature, and history through co-creation, it takes form as “The Tree Folly,” grown together through shared effort. A folly is a pavilion-like structure without a fixed function. Interpreting the project as an act of collectively nurturing a tree around which people can gather, the design proposed a new place beneath the canopy, articulated through a structural form inspired by the shape of a tree. The project involved working with students and other stakeholders through visits to the forests and sawmills supplying the timber, emphasizing hands-on learning and personal engagement throughout the process. Guided by this spirit of growing together, the project also actively engages with resource circulation within the Lake Biwa watershed.
