The four stations are placed to match the urban scale of Nakanoshima, and function as a three-dimensional walking path that comes up from the underground concourse and links to a waterside footpath. The station space was given the role of “the town’s living room,” as pleasant spaces dotted around on footpaths. We proposed untreated wood as a timeless material, able to carry on and advance the history and culture of Nakanoshima. We were able to create a “hospitality space” in the subway station, by surrounding it with untreated wood.
