This rebuilding plan continued for around six years while the existing Ekoda Campus was still in use. The tasks for the plan were “a layout plan that considers the particular sound problems of the Faculty of Art concerning the surrounding environment” and “planning with consideration of the sequence of rebuilding and relocation, while identifying the characteristics of each subject and department.” These issues made for extremely complex work. To bring out the creative activities of the students to the full, we followed the concept of “the campus as canvas,” aiming to give the students the lead role and the buildings supporting roles. We also carried on the existing image of a white campus, setting “simple, white campus” as the design theme. We arranged buildings around courtyards, with interdisciplinary exchange in mind, and that approach of cutting through a scrum produced the image of drawing in local society. We placed an art gallery in the entrance that is not affiliated with any subject, and made it the “Nihon University College of Art Showcase,” to publicize students’ activities widely to society.
