Nagoya Castle Tower, which became the first castle wall to be designated as a national treasure, was burned by war fire in 1945. The current tower was reconstructed in 1959 with a steel framed reinforced concrete structure, but it faces problems of seismic resistance and deterioration of its building services. To overcome those issues, and foster understanding of the intrinsic value of the Nagoya Castle ruins, Nagoya City restored the timber tower. This work was based on abundant documentation left until the present, such as the Kinjo-onko-roku records, Showa survey charts, and dry plate photographs. We made technical proposals to assist in implementation, and made a negotiation-method public proposal. The result was that Takenaka Corporation was picked to have the right of first refusal. Takenaka Corporation is now in charge of design implementation while we are working on client support.
