Renovation 8 Nara City Main Government Building, Renovation
The 40-year-old Nara City Hall was renovated to ensure earthquake resistance, extend service life, and improve civic functionality.
The key goals of the renovation process were to carry out construction work while keeping the building occupied, to shorten the construction period, and not to disrupt the working environment. An external anti-seismic frame was constructed on the north exterior wall to ensure that civic services could be maintained during construction. The south façade, which is open to the city, has retained the appearance familiar to the public since the building’s completion.
In terms of longevity, further convenience and safety were ensured by changing the layout of service counters, updating old air conditioning equipment and elevators, and installing an emergency power generator to ensure business continuity in the event of a disaster. The deteriorated tile walls of the civic lobby have also been replaced with warm, local timber to create a bright space with a woody aroma that welcomes citizens.
