Ono Pharmaceutical Minase Research Institute

A new research center to generate innovation

This building is the third research building of the Minase Laboratory. It was planned to consolidate the chemical compound synthesis and analysis functions that had been dispersed between the Minase Laboratory and the Fukui Laboratory, and served as a “monozukuri (manufacturing craft) center,” to strengthen linkages between initial research and experimental stages and raise the speed of R&D. Precast and prestressed concrete for the main framework of the structure produced large-span spaces. The clear and flexible floor composition will be able to adapt flexibly to future reorganization. Other than protecting lives in the event of a disaster, the seismic isolation structure and newly-installed emergency power source equipment etc. enable continuity in research functions. On each floor there are glass screens, extending to ceiling height, between adjoining lab and desk areas, to enhance access and visibility. The stable indirect light coming through the full-height glass curtain wall on the north side, and the ceiling that exposes the PC floor slab, create an openly spacious and expansive working environment. The desk areas include relaxation spaces on intermediate floors, accessible from the floors above and below, to foster communications between researchers. Stairs and atrium voids linking upper and lower floors are placed alongside the curtain wall to make a space that creates a sense of inter-floor and inter-departmental unity. The exterior terrace is used as a place for refreshment and communication. The new and old buildings are linked by a connecting corridor, intended to produce synergy effects between their facilities. The facade design of the new building is also based on the old building, and blends into the verdant mountain scenery without incongruity.
