Renewal of a fish market to improve safety, quality, and sanitation management of the aging facilities. Beginning in 2014 with the construction of a temporary facility, a new market building was built on the same site and the demolition of the existing building took place, in a two-part reconstruction method while the market was in operation. The concept was to create an attractive, vibrant, and functional fish market. The project was developed as a closed market that establishes a cold chain with thorough temperature control and sanitation management. The entire market is built on stilts with platforms to facilitate efficient logistics, while some of the wholesale areas are at ground level to allow direct unloading from vessels docked at the port. The structural frame is made of precast concrete in consideration of long-term durability and resistance to salt damage. On the exterior, the four vertically accented towers are balanced on the balconies where the horizontal is coordinated to form a rhythmic skyline with Sakurajima in the background. The unique design has a sense of floating and makes it a landmark facility. Furthermore, by offering opportunities and places for citizens to connect with the market, such as market tours and cooking classes, we aimed to create a market that appeals widely to the public as well as promotes seafood consumption.
