Nihonbashi Tax Office, Seismic Retrofitting

A long-lived government building, reborn with intermediate floor seismic isolation

This project used seismic isolation retrofitting to remodel Nihonbashi Tax Office, which was around 50 years old, for seismic resistance. The building stands on a narrow plot of land, with adjoining buildings very close, which made it difficult to excavate the foundations. Therefore, seismic isolation equipment was installed on the 1st floor. This construction method meant that the elevator shafts and staircases were suspended from the upper structure down to the 1st basement level. To reduce the weight of the building, the exterior curtain wall was changed from precast concrete panels to vertically-continuous aluminum panels. Low-E multi-layered glass was chosen for the window glass, to reduce thermal loads.
