The Nihonbashi Nomura Building, designed by our founder, Takeo Yasui, has been well-loved as a distinct part of Tokyo’s Nihonbashi district since its completion in 1930. At the time of its construction In Nihonbashi Tokyo, at the starting point of the Tokaido route, the building’s design had to be sufficiently dignified to stand proudly as the foothold for Osaka Nomura Bank’s expansion into Tokyo. The work is said to be one of Takeo Yasui’s career highlights after his painstaking effort and deep exploration of various architectural ideologies. The three-layered configuration balances the stonework of the first floor, the dark-colored tiles wrapping around the midsection, and the bright top section. The decorative qualities of the top floors, in particular, have been deemed by DOCOMOMO Japan to be part of the modern movement in architecture representing a period of design leading up to the transition to modernism.
